Beauty Blunder 5: How-to Tell A Friend Their Look Is Bad

Question: My 50 year old brother-in-law visited recently for a family birthday party. I strongly suspect he is cutting his own hair. Most of the cut was unremarkable but a portion (think of the state of Florida) was too long on the back side of the head. I am sure about the Florida part.

I did take pictures but, in kindness I avoided that offensive spot. If it was a small state like Delaware or Rhode Island then 'NO PROBLEM but this was FLORIDA!  How do I let him know he should turn on the lights when he cuts his hair? I don't want him to be embarrassed. How do I fix this blunder once and for all? -Joe

Answer: That was so entertaining to read!  It sounds like you have a great sense of humor which will be crucial in your bringing up this beauty blunder.

Ingredient Investigation: Perfumes & Fragrances

Do you feel that you're being nasally assaulted whenever you walk down the perfume aisle at your local department store?  There's usually a line of women waiting in suits ready to spray you like you're the cat that jumped on the kitchen table.

The art of perfume has a long history with humankind, from its use as a poison to it's ability to be people potpourri.  Just open your nostrils & take a deep whiff.

Did you know that some perfumes have up to 200 ingredients in their formulation?  Some of these are synthetic chemicals created to imitate natural aromas.  Fresh air scent, anyone?  Ocean?

Though they are frequently left out of many hypoallergenic products, perfumes cause a variety of allergic reactions in humans.

Beauty Blunder 3: What Do I Use To Keep Eyebrow Hairs In Place?

Annoyed, F, 19, Asks: I once had this great liquid gel to prevent my eyebrows from sticking up. Besides cutting them extremely short, is there anything else I can do? I can't find the gel anywhere. Thanks!

Answer:  I would be annoyed, too!  I hate when I lose something I like to use.  I assume you don't remember the name of the product, or you would have purchased another.  I would never, ever recommend cutting eyebrow hair extremely short.  There's a lot of potential to take too much & then look silly.  I would, however, recommend trying clear mascara.  It works great to keep those hairs in place, & it comes with a handy applicator brush, so you don't have to apply a product & then look for a small comb to keep the hairs in place.  I hope this helps!

Shimmery Shadow for Blue Hues

Question:  Sally asked,"Do you have any recommendations for color combinations? Does your eye color matter? I've always thought I shouldn't use blue-related hues because I have blue eyes, but some people have told me this doesn't matter."

Answer:  Hi Sally! I'm glad you enjoyed my first blog video. A sexy shimmery eye doesn't have to be a long process, & once you know your favorite colors, you can achieve the look even faster.

As far as color goes, I think blue eyes are some of the most striking looking because of their light appearance. I especially love the way lavender & a darker purple looks on blue eyes. You can experiment with golds & warm colors to contrast with the coolness of blue. Or, you can test out sea greens & pearly pinks to try something bolder.

The most important thing to have when using any shade of shadow is
confidence. I've seen blue on blue combos that really stand out, so don't be afraid to try something new.

Thanks for the comment :)

2 Color Shimmery Shadow Look

Hey guys!

This is my tutorial on a two color shimmery eye look.  I hope you like it :)
  • After setting concealer & foundation, apply an eyeshadow primer.  This works to grab the color & make it really pop.
  • Choose your 2 shimmery colors (You can keep them in the same color family like I did, or mix & match depending on how bold you want your look.)  My colors were from Bare Escentuals: Nude Beach (Lighter) & Downtown (Darker)
  • Keep your two shadow brushes separate to eliminate confusion
  • Start with the light color first by using the excess powder found in the cap.  It's usually enough to start.  Blend from the corner of your eye (closest to your nose) to the middle of your eyelid.  Don't go all the way up to your brow.  Dip your brush in more shadow & swirl, or tap, the excess off on the lid.  Continue until desired effect.
  • Do the same for the darker color, except begin the color from the middle of the eyelid to the end of the eyelid.  Keep a nice round shape, keep some distance from the brow, & don't apply it too far past the end of your eye.
  • Bring the darker color just slightly under the lower lash line for a smoky dramatic look.
Finish up with your signature mascara, eyeliner, etc.

I hope you guys found this easy to follow.  Leave me some comments, so I can customize my posts to bring you everything you want to learn.

Rave Fave: Concealer

We all get the occasional pimple or bump.  Sometimes it has to do with hormones, other times irritation & allergy.  To top that off, in my family, we have dark under-eye circles.  When I was a little girl, someone else's mother told me I looked tired all of the time. After that, I became very self-conscious & aware of my under-eye area.  At twenty-four, I've found a concealer that finally works without clogging my pores or making me look like I have reverse-raccoon eyes! It comes in a small pot that fits discreetly in my purse or clutch, & I carry it with me everywhere.

Here is my before picture; I have no makeup on:

See the veins & dark coloration?

Here is my after picture; I have only concealer on:

See how it illuminates the under-eye area.  I normally add a little mineral powder over my concealer to make it more of a matte look, but that's just my preference.

Would you like to know which concealer takes my eyes from dark & tired looking to bright & well-rested?

Ingredient Investigation: Acetone

Everyone loves a good manicure...

But there's an avoidable ingredient, known for its harmful effects,
that may be in your polish & remover.

ACETONE

This colorless liquid is commonly used as a solvent in nail polish removers & nail finishes, but do you know any of its other uses?  Acetone acts as a solvent for airplane glue, fats, oils, & waxes.  Have you ever had fake, acrylic nails?  When you decide to take the nails off or get a new set, Acetone is the liquid used in the salon to dissolve the thick acrylic from your natural nails.  It's heavy-duty stuff, a lot stronger than necessary for natural nails.

In 1992, a ban was proposed by the FDA to stop the inclusion of Acetone in astringent products because the ingredient had not proven to be safe & effective as claimed.

This ingredient can cause:

Emmanuelle Chriqui

Future sex symbol Emmanuelle Chriqui kicked things off in the culturally-diverse city of Montreal. With a Moroccan and Jewish background, her own diversity would've been a natural fit, but she and her family went to Toronto after two years. It was here that she began acting on stage at 7, and in an effort to pursue her acting dream, she pleaded with her parents to let her take acting classes. Citing financial difficulties, they were unable to accommodate her, but Emmanuelle Chriqui's older brother footed the bill himself and, at age 10, she landed her first TV gig when she let a cheeseburger dance on her shirt for a McDonald's commercial. This reinforced her dream of being famous, and soon she would be chasing her personal idols like Madonna, Olivia Newton-John and even her favorite Canadian celebrity, Corey Hart.

After graduating from Unionville High School, she moved to Vancouver where she waited tables and chased acting roles in Hollywood North. The bulk of her work during this period came through television guest spots on shows like Forever Knight and Are You Afraid of the Dark?, but in 1999, she won a featured role in the KISS-influenced rock comedy Detroit Rock City. The family-friendly Snow Day was her successful follow-up and after starring with a pre-ER Katherine Heigl in 100 Girls, Emmanuelle Chriqui was poised for her next big break.

emmanuelle chriqui stars on wrong turn and entourage

In 2001, Emmanuelle Chriqui was cast in Steven Spielberg's robot opus, Artificial Intelligence: A.I., and Todd Solondz's Storytelling, but in both cases, her scenes were deleted. She had to settle for Lance Bass instead by playing his love interest in the poorly-received romance On the Line. She recovered her confidence somewhat by running from crazies with Eliza Dushku in the 2003 horror film, Wrong Turn, and returning to television in 2005 for three wildly different projects. First, she appeared on the The O.C. for a multi-episode stint before signing onboard the unique George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh-produced Unscripted where she played herself alongside other "real" actors and a handful of fictional characters.

Following her first two TV projects in 2005, Emmanuelle Chriqui landed what would be her most popular television role as Sloan McQuewick, the sultry on-screen companion of Eric Murphy, on Entourage. Her role on the series would grow with age with the highlight for many male viewers being an on-screen threesome that featured Emmanuelle Chriqui with fellow Canadian cutie Malin Akerman (check out our recent Malin Akerman Interview). At the same time, Emmanuelle continued to foster her film career by taking supporting roles alongside Usher in In the Mix and Ryan Reynolds in the crude restaurant comedy, Waiting....

While she continued her Entourage stint and added a guest spot on Robot Chicken to her 2008 portfolio, Emmanuelle Chriqui also enjoyed her highest-profile film role as Dahlia, the woman who gets the attention of Israeli soldier-turned-hair stylist Adam Sandler in the comedy hit, You Don't Mess with the Zohan. The following year, she would play Evetta Chess in Cadillac Records, which was top-lined by Beyonce and Adrien Brody.

After starting 2010 at the forefront of AskMen.com's Top 99 Women list, Emmanuelle Chriqui pursued additional opportunities in the film world with a number of interesting roles. She joined indie stalwart Steve Buscemi and edgy comedienne Sarah Silverman to play an injured stripper named Tasty D. Lite in Saint John of Las Vegas before moving on to the crime thriller 13, with Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham, and the fact-based drama Georgia, starring Val Kilmer.

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale had acting in the blood, given that she was the offspring of the late British comedian Richard Beckinsale and his actress wife Judy Loe. As a teenager, she was enrolled at London's all-female Godolphin and Latymer School and won a pair of writing contests for her astute skills in poetry and short story writing. Nevertheless, she had a rebellious streak that came out in funny ways -- like a first-place finish at the Youth's Burp for Fame contest -- and in more serious ways like regular smoking and a bout with anorexia.

Once she gained control of her demons, Kate Beckinsale decided to move forward with acting while in the midst of her Russian and French literature studies at Oxford University. Small roles in a string of television movies, starting with One Against the Wind in 1991, eventually led to her feature film debut as Hero in Kenneth Branagh's 1993 Shakespearean effort, Much Ado About Nothing. Kate Beckinsale would follow it up with a role opposite a young Christian Bale in Prince of Jutland a year later and the lead role of Emma Woodhouse in the Emmy-winning Emma in 1996. Following a turn as the socialite partner in crime to Chloe Sevigny in 1998's The Last Days of Disco, Kate Beckinsale landed a lead role opposite Claire Danes in the intense Thailand tourist drama, Brokedown Palace. The film was a box-office disappointment, but it marked a smooth transition for Kate Beckinsale from small-scale independent films and British dramas into full-blown Hollywood fare.

kate beckinsale in pearl harbor and underworld

In 2001, Kate Beckinsale broke into the ranks of blockbusters with the lead female role of Evelyn Johnson in Michael Bay's action tearjerker (who knew there was such a thing?), Pearl Harbor. As a heroic nurse, she got to romance both Josh Hartnett and Ben Affleck while recreating one of the darkest moments of American history. Though Kate Beckinsale and her two male costars had a shared Razzie Award nomination for Worst On-Screen Couple, the film was one of the year's biggest hits and the actress did earn an MTV Movie Awards nomination for Best Female Performance.

After reteaming with Christian Bale to play his beautiful but cold companion in the L.A. drama, Laurel Canyon, Kate Beckinsale embodied the most memorable role of her young career in Underworld -- playing Selene, a vampire with a penchant for tight leather outfits and a forbidden attraction to a werewolf. The film was a cult favorite and led its leading lady straight into the arms of Hugh Jackman for another mix of action and chills in 2004's summer extravaganza, Van Helsing. Just when audiences and critics had her pegged as a purely mainstream actress, Kate Beckinsale surprised many with her sharp turn as screen legend Ava Gardner in Martin Scorsese's look at Howard Hughes (via Leonardo DiCaprio) in the Oscar contender, The Aviator.

kate beckinsale in whiteout and everybody's fine

2006 marked Kate Beckinsale's next adventure as Selene for the inevitable sequel, Underworld: Evolution, which was a hot ticket at the box office and a solid career move. Next up was Click, a comedy that had the beauty playing the confused wife of Adam Sandler as he uses a remote control to skip through the key events of his adult life. Kate Beckinsale ventured back to the horror realm as a wife trapped in a seedy hotel room with her equally afraid husband, Luke Wilson, in 2007's Vacancy.

Having grown accustomed to action-heavy (and not always acting-heavy) films in recent years, Kate Beckinsale took a step toward developing her talents with a pair of smaller-scale efforts in 2008. The first was Winged Creatures featuring Sam Rockwell and the second was Nothing But the Truth, which cast Kate Beckinsale as a journalist threatened with jail time after leaking the identity of a CIA agent. The story was inspired by the real-life Valerie Plame scandal. In 2009, Kate Beckinsale returned to the studio system to play a U.S. Marshal chasing a killer in Antarctica in Whiteout and the daughter of recent widower Robert De Niro in Everybody's Fine. After being named the Sexiest Woman Alive by Esquire that same year, Kate Beckinsale was rumored to be appearing in 2011's Underworld 3-D, which is set to be directed by her husband, Len Wiseman.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

The oldest of three, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley can credit her close-knit family for instilling both the organic virtues and healthy values that would later help her look good and keep her out of trouble (for the most part) as a professional model. Thanks to a farm on the family property, homegrown vegetables were regular staples on the dinner table, and the supportive nature of her family gave Rosie Huntington-Whiteley a positive, realistic outlook on life.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's personality was so grounded, in fact, that while she had a childhood interest in fashion, she never believed herself to be good-looking enough to make it. Instead, she imagined herself dressing models as a designer, but fate (who must have an eye for models) had different plans for her. In 2003, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was attending Tavistock College when she sought work as a dispatcher at Profile, a London modeling agency. A Profile agent thought she might be better off as a model instead.

Life as a model was an adjustment for Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. She had to contend with older (and cattier) women around her and the rigorous work schedule. Most of her first year at Profile was spent doing local assignments, which gave her time to adjust. In 2004, she signed with the internationally recognized Women Management and promptly appeared in a pair of magazine editorials, for ELLEgirl and Teen Vogue, soon afterward. From there, she was off to New York for her first runway shows in the Big Apple and a big payday as part of Tommy Hilfiger's fall campaign. By the spring of 2005, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley had also appeared on four magazine covers (Wallpaper, L'Officiel, Italian D, Japanese Vogue) and was living her dream, even if it meant that organic food would sometimes be difficult to come by.

rosie huntington-whiteley and kanye west

The lingerie experts at Victoria's Secret contacted Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in 2005 to join them for a catalog shoot. She accepted, and as a result of stripping down to her underwear, she found herself on the Victoria's Secret runway a year later alongside Adriana Lima and Gisele Bundchen. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's association with Victoria's Secret would prove to be long-lasting and lucrative -- always good in our books -- and the company would choose her as a spokesmodel for its college-targeted PINK line. Simultaneously, she continued to jump between ad campaigns (DKNY, BCGB Max Azria), catalog work (Macy's, Bloomingdale's) and magazine editorials (New York, Elle, Harper's & Queen). She also joined the music video culture with an appearance in the Kanye West/Pharrell Williams collaboration, "Number One."

rosie huntington-whiteley models for burberry and poses for vogue

With her traffic-stopping figure being broadcast around the world through ads and magazines, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was now a true star in the making with a solid industry reputation for being efficient and reliable. Naturally, it was the perfect time for a scandal. Just months after being signed on as the face of Burberry, the very same A-list fashion house that once hired a young Kate Moss, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley drew an unfavorable comparison to Moss (for drugs) when a picture was published of her holding a bong pipe with fellow models Jennifer Pugh and Aleksandra Rastovic. Though the picture was several years old, the allegations were damaging and rumors quickly surfaced that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley would be released from her Burberry contract. Her ads for the company's Autumn 2008 campaign went through as scheduled, but her fate with Burberry remains up in the air.

In November of 2008, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley found herself in yet another high-profile picture with two models, but this time it would prove to be completely beneficial to her career. She snagged the cover of the UK edition of Vogue, sharing the page with beauties Eden Clark and Jourdan Dunn. As the cover was a lot more flattering than the bong picture, it put Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's career back on the fast track, and she would close the year by participating in the Victoria's Secret fashion expose before winning top honors as Model of the Year at the 2009 Elle Style Awards and becoming an official Victoria's Secret Angel in November of 2009. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley jump-started 2010 with a photo shoot for the racy (and wildly popular) Pirelli calendar. Now, after being handpicked by Michael Bay to replace Megan Fox in Transformers 3, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's name is about to become household.

The Lifespan Of Cosmetics

A crucial part of owning cosmetics is knowing when to throw them away.

Cosmetics are NOT required by law to have an expiration date, so it’s important to keep tabs on your brands.  Manufacturers should provide information about the shelf-life of their products, as part of their responsibility to enforce product safety, but most often than not, beauty products come with little more than the pretty box they came in.

You should know that as soon as you pop the top or slide the wand inside, bacteria will begin to grow & the product’s effectiveness will start to decrease.

  • All makeup should be kept in a cool, dry place.
  • If your products change color, consistency, or smell, you should throw them away.
  • Cosmetics with substantial natural ingredients, or no preservatives, have a shorter shelf life.
  • Bottles with wide mouths expose more air & spoil sooner.

The following chart makes it easy:

The Advantages of Aloe

The Aloe Vera plant is synonymous with soothing sunburn, but there are a variety of other benefits to squeezing its juicy nectar.  When you break open a thick green stalk of Aloe, you are breaking open a treasure trove of nutrients & minerals existing inside an environment that is 99.5% water.

These include:

·         amino acids
·         enzymes
·         vitamins C & E
·         minerals
·         plant steroids
·         polysaccharides
·         galactose
·         silica & zinc

Aloe is high in sulphur, & its slightly acidic pH creates the perfect antibacterial atmosphere, if you happen to suffer from dandruff.  Each of these benefits helps to naturally fortify follicles, reflect light, & add instant gloss to a dull do.  Used medicinally for more than 3000 years, & especially during ancient Egyptian times, Aloe has been used as a first aid cure for skin irritation (including hives), wounds, burns, & infections.

Selena Gomez special Dating with Justin Bieber

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber made their first public appearance as a couple on Oscar night a few weeks ago, and now the starlet has had to do a bit of back peddling about their relationship -- especially since in past interviews she said the Bieb was like her brother!

Selena was on the Ellen Degeneres Show today and was teased about her secret boyfriend when Ellen played a clip of her comments about him from the past. The Disney starlet was seen saying in defense of the romance rumors a while back (via Us magazine): "He's like my little brother. That's weird to me."

When Ellen turned to her for an explanation, Selena was pretty defenseless. She said: "Don't take me to jail! I don't know! I don't know." Poor girl!

The talk show host continued: "Now you've made [the relationship] public," DeGeneres pointed out. "[You've] made me a fool."

"No, I really didn't...He's just sweet!" was Selena's response.

Of course, Ellen had to keeping poking fun at the starlet: "He's not like your little brother, is he? No, he's not. And he's a fantastic guy. You can't try to hide that forever. I know you all were sneaking around but that's crazy. You're both huge stars and you can't hide from us!" she said.

Selena simply replied: "I didn't lie to you. I didn't though. I'll say that."

"No, you didn't blatantly lie," DeGeneres said. "[But] a little brother is not someone you want to date."

"Well, no," Gomez replied. "That would be weird."

Demi Lovato and Story about Ghosts

Demi Lovato is apparently a believer in the supernatural. This week, the Disney star told TMZ that she spied a spectre hanging out in her closet once upon a time: "It was creepy, it was in my closet when I was about eight it scared me to death. It just popped out and it was horrible!"

Lovato is by no means the only star who claims to have been haunted once or twice. A while back, a member of Lady Gaga's tour crew claimed the pop singer was being followed by an "annoying" spirit named Ryan. Other celebs who've recounted creepy encounters include Nicolas Cage, Keanu Reeves and Matthew McConaughey.

The Beauty How-to Blog

Spring is finally here, and we have a new name: THE BEAUTY BLUNDER BLOG!  My goal, as I revisit the former "An Unconventionalist's Truth" after taking a long break to focus on my writing in college, is to experiment less with fiction and poetry and to write more about my nonfiction interests (beauty, natural health, music, fashion, gossip, glamour....)  I plan to tell the story of being born into a beauty-business family, of finding my way to cosmetology school and the hair, skin, and nail industry, and I hope to help you spend less time in the salon and more time educating yourself to be your own beautician.

Marisa Miller

Marisa Miller (nee Marisa Bertetta) was born and raised in Santa Cruz, the sunny surfing capital of California. As a naturally beautiful girl who just didn't realize that the odds for supermodel stardom were stacked heavily in her favor, she developed a liking first for volleyball, surfing and the friendship of boys. Though she regularly dressed in heavy clothes to obscure her figure, Marisa Miller did manage to catch the attention of two Italian modeling scouts at age 16, when she strolled by them in a San Francisco eatery. An invitation to visit Italy quickly followed. Marisa Miller's subsequent trip to Italy with her mom offered her a quick look at the modeling industry, but she still had to get over her shyness if she hoped to enter the industry as a professional. Three years later, back in California, Marisa Miller literally stripped off her shyness in 1997 as the cover girl for the debut issue of the magazine Perfect 10. Appearing au naturel on the cover, Marisa was indeed a perfect 10. She would repeat the feat with two more covers for the magazine in 1998 and 1999.

The shift for Marisa Miller from alluring newcomer to full-fledged modeling star came in 2001, courtesy of an introduction to acclaimed fashion photographer Mario Testino. When a friend passed along some photos of her to the photographer, he insisted on a meeting, which took place at the surfing school that she was operating. After taking pictures of the model as she surfed, Mario Testino promptly suggested that she participate in a pair of editorials for two installments of Vogue. Marisa agreed and only half a year later, she was booked by both Sports Illustrated and Victoria's Secret.

Between 2002 and 2008, Marisa Miller came to dominate the famed Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Besides making an appearance in each issue, she had a number of notable poses -- ranging from an 8-hours-in-the-making painted swimsuit in 2004 to a pop culture-embracing iPod swimsuit in 2007. As the cover girl of the 2008 issue, Marisa Miller coaxed a record 228 million people to the SI site and celebrated the release of her own "Best of Marisa Miller" calendar that same year. During her rise to prominence at Sports Illustrated, Marisa Miller came to be equally busy with Victoria's Secret, which included filming a bra TV spot with Heidi Klum, walking the company's fashion show in 2007, and pitching its perfume, Very Sexy Dare, in 2008 as one of the Victoria's Secret Angels.

Marisa Miller's dual associations with Victoria's Secret and Sports Illustrated represented two of her longest-running modeling assignments, but her high stature with both entities also put her in incredibly high demand with other companies who could accommodate her scheduling and salary requirements. British versions of Esquire and Cosmopolitan came to shoot her for cover shoots, while brands as diverse as Harley-Davidson and Bath & Body Works hired her to model. One such advertiser was the video game giant Activision, who brought her on to film an ad for the 2008 release of Guitar Hero: World Tour. In a sexy parallel to the state of her career, the ad was removed from broadcast for being too racy, but would later resurface through the joys of social media and enhance Marisa Miller's already-skyrocketing popularity.

In 2009, Marisa Miller enjoyed what was perhaps the highlight of her Victoria's Secret career. At the annual fashion show, she was chosen to wear the company's Fantasy Bra, a $3 million creation that featured 150 carats and 2,300 diamonds. Having appropriately stunned viewers of the show, Marisa Miller celebrated 2010 with a cover shoot for Vegas Magazine and a No. 2 ranking on AskMen's list of the Top 99 Women.

Bar Refaeli

Bar Refaeli was born on June 4, 1985, in a rural region of Israel. She was raised on a horse ranch, but her countryside origins never inhibited her ambitions. She started modeling before she could even walk and talk. At 8 months old, Bar Refaeli was already doing commercials. After such an early career start, Bar Refaeli had to undergo that traumatic experience that every child fears: getting braces. Of course, getting braces quickly derailed her modeling career. So, for over three years, Bar Refaeli resorted back to her normal life -- a life devoid of modeling. When the braces came off in 1997, however, Bar Refaeli wasted no time getting right back into the industry. At the tender age of 11, she burst back onto the modeling scene and has been there ever since. She then appeared in numerous advertisements and infomercials in Israel.

Bar Refaeli’s rise to prominence seemed to happen overnight. At the age of 15, Bar began to model for catalogs such as Castro and Pilpel. Her undeniable good looks made her an automatic interest for most international magazines and covers.

The turn of the century marked a sign of good things to come for the Israeli vixen. In 2000, she won the title of Model of the Year in a beauty contest, and in 2001, she won her title yet again, as her beauty and modeling talents couldn't be denied. In 2002 and 2003, she was chosen to be the home model of the Renuar fashion network. Additionally, Bar Refaeli was selected for an international fashion production and appeared in the French ELLE magazine.

It was during her rise to prominence that she attained gigs with GQ and Ralph Lauren. However, Bar Refaeli claimed that it was the editorial section in an issue of French ELLE that cemented her celebrity. The editorial section attached her name with the face that so many people were becoming accustomed to seeing, and once her name was attached a celebrity was born.

Bar Refaeli ended up doing photo shoots with Sports Illustrated magazine and Victoria’s Secret. Her career has essentially grown right in front of our eyes; she has developed a sense of how to work in front of a camera, and photographers like working with her.

In early 2007, Bar Refaeli landed more work with SI, and signed a deal with Chanel’s makeup brand.

Putting her at an even higher pinnacle of celebrity, her once-romantic link with award-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio speaks mounds for her popularity, although the couple split in the summer of 2009.

In 2007, Bar Refaeli was also awarded "Sexiest Import" at the 2007 Spike TV Guys' Choice Awards. So it's no wonder AskMen.com readers put Bar so high up on out 2008 Top 99 list. She dropped to No. 34 in 2009, just missing being included in the top third of the 99 Most Desirable Women of the year.

After becoming the spokesmodel for Diddy's scent "I Am King" as well as the clothing brand Hurley, Bar Refaeli was featured in Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Edition in February 2009, this time making the coveted cover. In July 2009, Refaeli posed entirely nude, save for a passage from Stephen King’s short story "Morality" painted on her body, for the cover of Esquire.

In 2010, Bar Refaeli landed the No. 13 position on AskMen.com's list of the Top 99 Most Desirable Women of 2010. She also appeared in the 2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, but lost the cover to Brooklyn Decker, aka Mrs. Andy Roddick, who notably came in at No. 31 on AskMen.com's 2010 list of the Top 99. Although rumors are circulating that Bar was disappointed about not landing the cover of SI, we'd like to remind her that she's moved up in the ranks, at least according to AskMen.com.

Candice Swanepoel

What model scout Kevin Ellise was doing in a Durban, South African flea market, we'll never know. But thank goodness he was there because, otherwise, we may have never had the pleasure of ogling a scantily clad Candice Swanepoel, whom he discovered there when she was just 15. Ellise had this to say about the first time he laid eyes on Swanepoel: "It was like… honestly, like a beautiful flamingo walking past my shop. The way she walked past just did it for me.” Clearly it did it for the modeling agencies too; Swanepoel was commanding 5,000 Euros for a day's work by the time she was 16.

Candice Swanepoel's rise to stardom is the stuff fairy tales are made of. As a young girl growing up in the remote South African farming village Mooi River, Swanepoel's model aspirations were literally oceans away. Once she was discovered, Candice met with the head of a local modeling agency who snapped some Polaroids and sent them out to Select, a London agency that represents top talent like Sienna Miller and Helena Christensen. Within 25 minutes of receiving the Polaroids, Select requested Candice's presence in London immediately. After a flurry of castings in London and New York, Swanepoel was just a year into her career when she began strutting down the world's most exclusive catwalks while appearing in Italian Vogue photo campaigns for Fornarina and Top Shop.

Having appeared on the covers of Greece Vogue and Elle Germany, as well as runway shows for Dolce & Gabbana, Betsey Johnson, Tommy Hilfiger, and Diane Von Furstenberg, Swanepoel's career has been a success by any standards. But in 2007, she joined the ranks of supermodels Miranda Kerr and Alessandra Ambrosio when Victoria's Secret bestowed on her a title that transcends our conventional ideas of beauty: Candice Swanepoel became a Victoria's Secret Angel, and will forever be worshiped by you, us and everyone we know.

Brad Pitt

Before doing research for this piece, we just assumed Brad Pitt was the product of a genetic experiment in which scientists attempted to create the perfect human specimen for reasons that remain unknown. It turns out that Brad was conceived naturally and actually does have parents -- Jane Etta, a high school counselor, and William Alvin Pitt, a truck company owner -- go figure. A classic go-getter while attending Springfield, Missouri's Kickapoo High School, Brad first caught the acting bug while starring in various high school musicals. After graduating, he attended the University of Missouri where he majored in journalism and continued acting as a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. But two weeks prior to graduation, something compelled Brad to leave university and move to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Let's let the man himself explain why: "I had this sinking feeling as graduation approached. I saw my friends getting jobs. I wasn't ready to settle down. I loved films. They were a portal into different worlds for me, and Missouri wasn't where movies were made. Then it hit me: If they didn't come to me, I'd go to them." Something tells us he made the right decision.

brad pitt's humble beginnings

If you think superstardom just fell into Brad Pitt's lap, you're sorely mistaken. Unlike today's generation of young stars, Brad Pitt's rise to the top was littered with meandering appearances on television shows like Growing Pains, Dallas and 21 Jump Street and films like No Way Out, No Man's Land and Less Than Zero. These small roles in mostly inconsequential projects would continue until 1991, when Pitt played Geena Davis' outlaw lover in Ridley Scott's smash hit Thelma and Louise. The breakout role earned Pitt widespread attention and acclaim, and would prove to be the catalyst for many fo his early successes including the films Johnny Suede, Cool World, A River Runs Through It, and Kalifornia.

brad pitt becomes a movie star

Already armed with unbelievable physical attributes, Pitt used his turns in Robert Redford's A River Runs Through It, and Kalifornia to prove to the world that he could act too. For Brad Pitt, taking over Hollywood seemed inevitable. With roles in films like Interview With The Vampire, and Legends of The Fall (for which he received his first Golden Globe nod for best actor), Pitt managed to achieve widespread popularity but failed to find the perfect marriage of script and his talent. That is until David Fincher unleashed the grim thriller Se7en on the world, with Pitt's portrayal of the brash young detective David Mills going down as one of his best performances even to this day. Pitt followed that up with a role in the twisted sci-fi film Twelve Monkeys, for which he earned his first Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. However, Pitt's cinematic comfort zone continued to elude him, as his roles in Sleepers, The Devil's Own, Seven Years in Tibet, and Meet Joe Black were largely ignored by critics and audiences alike.

brad pitt's love life overshadows his acting career

Even with roles in films like Meet Joe Black, Fight Club, Snatch, The Mexican opposite Julia Roberts and Spy Games opposite Robert Redford, all anybody could talk about was what Brad was doing offscreen. Having already been involved in a highly publicized and ultimately failed engagement to Gwyneth Paltrow, Brad Pitt's love life came under even more scrutiny when he courted and eventually married Jennifer Aniston in 2000. With a seemingly successful marriage and a soaring film career--thanks to massive hits like Troy, Ocean's Eleven and Ocean's Twelve -- Brad Pitt could do no wrong. Then, in a move that still reverberates through the fabric of pop culture today, Brad Pitt signed on to appear in a film called Mr. and Mrs. Smith; his costar was a woman named Angelina Jolie. The rest, as they say, is history.

brad pitt gets together with angelina jolie to form "brangelina"

If someone were to tell us a decade ago that in due time, the world's two biggest stars would fall in love and then travel the world acquiring babies from some of the planet's most desperate countries, while giving birth to three of their own, we would laugh, and continue drinking our key lime milkshake. But alas, it came true! After inciting one of Hollywood's biggest scandals of all time by leaving Aniston for Jolie, Brad Pitt shamelessly began seeing Angelina, and claimed to have fallen in love with her while working on Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Since then, "Brangelina" as they are more commonly known, have gone on to become one of the world's most powerful couples--jet-setting celebrities who somehow seem more concerned with the world's struggles than they do their own careers. Most importantly, their desire to help others actually seems genuine, as opposed to simply an attempt at good publicity. Since meeting Angelina, Brad has been involved with various humanitarian initiatives including the ONE Campaign, aimed to fight AIDS and poverty in developing countries, and Not On Our Watch, an organization aimed at focusing global attention on the atrocities occurring in Darfur. Brad's love of architecture has also led to the creation of the Make It Right Foundation which will help in constructing 150 new houses in New Orleans' Hurricane Katrina-ravaged Ninth Ward, with an emphasis on sustainability and affordability. When Brad and Angelina aren't busy fixing the world's ills, they spend their time devoted to their children Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne. The Obama's may be The United States' first family, but the Jolie-Pitt's are the world's first family, no doubt.

what's up next for brad pitt?

After many personal and professional struggles, Brad Pitt finally seems to be in a groove. His last slew of films, including Babel (for which he received a Golden Globe nomination), Ocean's Thirteen, The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, Burn After Reading, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, for which he received his first Oscar nomination for best actor in a leading role, seem to be his most assured, and everyone is talking about his latest role as Lt. Aldo Raine in Quentin Tarantino's WWII romp Inglourious Basterds. Also look for Brad to make waves starring in Terrence Malick's highly anticipated The Tree of Life, which also stars Sean Penn and is expected to be released by year's end.

Pitt's production company, Plan B Entertainment--who had a hand in films like The Departed and A Mighty Heart--also has a slew of films on the way including Kick-Ass, Eat, Pray, Love, and The Sparrow.
